The Royal Yachting Association is the national governing body for yachting, sailing, and watersports in the UK. Learn about their history and role in modern sailing.
We offer a range of RYA certified sailing lessons and courses across the best marinas in the UK. Find out more today.
The Royal Yachting Association was originally founded in 1875 as the Yacht Racing Association. It's intentions were to make yacht racing fairer by standardising rules of measurements for boats.
Membership was open to anyone who owned, or had owned, a yacht that weighed 10 tonnes or over. Despite efforts to extend membership to smaller boats, this wouldn't occur until 1921.
Eventually the YRA joined with the Sailing Boat Association as well as the Boat Racing Association, creating the Royal Yachting Association, or RYA, in 1953. Since then the RYA has expanded greatly.
There are now over 2,500 RYA training centres in over 47 countries, with 155,000 people successfully finishing RYA courses every year. This goes to show just how widely respected this organisation is.
The aim of the RYA is to ensure that the safest standards are in place for British boating, and to promote the joy of sailing. It covers a wide range of boats and watersports, including dinghy and yacht racing, windsurfing, and powerboat racing.
The RYA manages the British sailing team, which has found continuous success under their leadership, winning successive gold Olympic medals for the past 15 years.
On behalf of the Department of Transport, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and British Government, the RYA distributes certificates as part of a comprehensive training programme. From beginners to experts, they have certificates for all levels.
If you want to learn how to sail, or enjoy a day of powerboat racing and watersports, then you'll want to visit an RYA approved venue and receive an official certificate.
We offer a range of excellent sailing days and courses in scenic locations, including Brighton, Southampton, and Poole. These locations have the most modern equipment available.
All instructors are RYA approved and the highest safety standards are always upheld. So you can enjoy your yachting and sailing day, or powerboating experience, with confidence.
